Walk Through Maritime History: Down the Ways the Wooden Ship Era

May 6 @ 2:00 pm - 3:30 pm

$10

The walk is approximately 1 and 1/2 hours and will take tour-goers along Shore Road to Scott’s Cove and return.  The walking tour explores the Dyer’s Neck-East Setauket Historical Shipbuilding District where coast-wise and ocean-going ships were built and where these local families, lived, worked and died.  You will see the carpenter shop where the construction planning took place and visit the area where completed ships wintered over and where the bones of these ships rest today.

As a special treat you will see the home where Benjamin Tallmadge, General Washinton’s intelligence chief was born as well as the location of the house where Anna Smith Strong lived during the Revolutionary War and where she set up her clothesline code to let Culper Spy Ring Chief Abraham Woodhull know where Caleb Brewster was hiding with his whaleboat to bring spy messages across the Long Island Sound to General Washington.

Note: All tours are an hour and a half long. Please arrive 15 minutes prior to the start times listed to ensure prompt start.

$10/person. Tour starts at 2:00 pm from The Town of Brookhaven Dock, Shore Road, East Setauket. (Turn off of 25A at Shore Road and proceed one half mile to the Town Beach and Town Dock)

Walk is conducted by Bev Tyler, Historian, Three Village Historical Society.
