Tea with a Spot of History : Annie Rensselaer Tinker of NYC and Poquott: Courageous Suffragist, Red Cross Volunteer and Philanthropist

May 8 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm

Free

Edward Laroque Tinker of Poquott had a sister, mentioned only once in his memoires but identified later by Dr. Catherine Tinker as Annie Rensselaer Tinker (1884-1924). What Catherine found about “Annie R.” is the beginning of a longer research project and a planned publication about this remarkable woman who participated in the important events of her era as a suffragist, war hero, and philanthropist in support of older “women who had worked for a living.”  Based on Catherine’s research in the archives at the Schlesinger Library on Women’s History and her work with the organization created under Annie R.’s will, the Annie Tinker Association for Women, Inc., she is unearthing details about the independent life and many causes supported by Annie Rensselaer Tinker before her untimely death in Europe in the 1920s.  Annie R.’s beloved summer cottage in Poquott and her plans for its use will be explored in this lively presentation linking Annie R.’s childhood home in Long Island with her experiences in NY society, the movement for woman suffrage, and her war relief efforts in WWI Europe.
